How to sync your Nseries device with Mac OS X
by Jose Marinez
Learn how you can sync your NSeries device with OS X using iSync and the Nokia plugins.
If you’re like me, you have a good share of contacts in your phone’s address book and some calendar events - meetings, birthdays, holidays, etc. - in your calendar. I used to have two versions of my calendar and contact information, one in my phone and the other on my Mac. I had to manually insert the information on both devices to keep them current, and to tell you the truth, I only did that when I remembered. I kept wishing for a better way. And you know what? There is - iSync.
What’s iSync?
iSync is an application from Apple that comes with Mac OS X. With iSync, you can synchronize data from iCal and the Address Book with devices like the N95. iSync takes the hassle out of managing data across devices by downloading changes and updating your phone or Mac when required.
What gets synched?
iSync takes the meetings and appointments you enter into your Nokia mobile phone calendar and transfers all of them to iCal, Apple’s calendar application. The transfer works the other way as well. You can make a new appointment or meeting on your Mac, and after the sync it will transfer to your phone.
Contacts such as phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, web addresses and their corresponding photos get synched too. Bought a new NSeries device and have all your contacts in your Mac? No problem. Just sync them and you’re ready to go in no time. No manual entry required.
How do I sync?
First you’ll need to visit Nokia’s iSync site to determine if your phone is automatically supported out-of-the-box by iSync, or if you need a plugin from Nokia. If you need a plugin, download the file to your Mac and install it. Once installed, you can start iSync to begin the process.
How does iSync work?
All Nokia devices supported by iSync can connect to your Mac through Bluetooth. In addition, some Nseries devices can also be synchronized through a USB cable. If iSync supports both Bluetooth and USB connections to your device, you can choose the connection method you prefer for the initial setup. However, once you choose a method, all other syncs from there on will use that method.
My recommendation? Just use Bluetooth. Remembering where you put your USB cable is the last thing you want to worry about if you’re in a hurry and just want to get your data synched.
Let’s sync!
1. Pair your device with your Mac using these instructions.
2. Launch iSync on your Mac. Go to Finder > Applications > iSync
3. From the iSync menu, select add device, then choose your Nokia NSeries device from the list.
4. Your NSeries device will be added to the iSync window. You can now sync your calendar and contact info.
Now every time you meet someone and add a new contact in your phone, or when you make a new appointment in your calendar, all you need to do is turn on Bluetooth on your device and on your Mac, go to iSync - Finder > Applications > iSync and hit the “Sync Devices” button. It doesn’t get any easier than this!
